There are inherent risks when performing security related functions. The objective of any security program is to mitigate risks, not only for the client/owner, but also the security personnel tasked with that goal. Clients and the general public have expectations that security will do something beyond "observe and report", especially when life safety is involved. When those expectations are not met, both security guards, and the organizations they represent, are criticized. When security appears to have been excessive in their response there is the potential for legal ramifications and damage to reputation. Various law firms are now offering services to the public who feel security guards have been negligent, or excessive, in performing their services.
Over the last few years, there has been an increase in security guards being seriously injured or killed in the performance of their duties. In many cases, that physical contact was not initiated by the guard.
How do Security Organizations balance client and public expectations, mitigate legal and reputational jeopardy, while still maintaining a safe work environment for security guards?
